textbook

Intro- Working in small groups of two or three, using textbooks and notes, students will create a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting Martin Luther King Jr.

Procedure
The groups will come together as a class and generate a Venn diagram comparing Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. Students will then view videos showing King and Malcolm X discussing each other’s philosophies.

Individual Assignment
Students will put themselves in the roles of MLK or Malcolm X. Students will then write a letter to either Malcolm X or MLK trying to convince them that their views are incorrect. Students are expected to support their opinions with examples. Students will then be divided into groups as Malcolm X and MLK. The two sides will then debate citing reasons they have used in their letters.

This activity will reinforce the concept that the civil rights movement comprised of many different methods and philosophies. It also introduces the idea that the civil rights movement became more radical after the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. in the late 1960s and 1970s.
